Education Activists: Give Tax Plan $500 Million to Public Ed
In Florida, there's never enough money to buy land, there's never enough money for education.
Legislators, parents, educators, and community activists will rally Thursday, starting with a press conference, 10:30 a.m. at the State Capitol in Tallahassee.
Apparently, $20.3 billion, the K-12 education budget for 2013-14, isn't enough. Never mind that per-student funding increased more than $400, to $6,779, and $480 million was set aside to boost salaries for teachers and administrators.
The education activists will call on Gov. Rick Scott to invest any additional revenue in public education "instead of tax giveaways to corporate special interests."
What has activists stirred up is that on Aug. 30 the governor announced his $500 million tax plan in front of an audience of conservatives and corporate donors. Says the rally advance team, "Floridians are eager to tell him to invest in our children's education system instead of tax cuts for the wealthy and well-connected few."
Democratic U.S. Rep. Karen Castor Dentel will speak.
