Ed Narain Files Bill to Protect Witnesses to Felony Acts
Florida Rep. Ed Narain, D-Tampa, filed a bill at the end of last week to enure witnesses of felony acts have their names exempted from public records.
“Members of the community who are trying to improve their neighborhoods by cooperating with police officers should not have to live in fear of reprisals or repercussions from criminals,” said Narain. “It’s a shame that children have been murdered with multiple witnesses and people are afraid to come forward. This bill addresses that concern by protecting the witness’ identifying information from release. It’s time to end the ‘stop snitching’ culture and this bill aims to do that and empower communities again.”
Narain’s bill would be effective until the end of the prosecution or when the statue of limitations on the felony expires.
