Ed Markey Retains Solid Lead Over Gabriel Gomez in Massachusetts Senate Race
Republicans should not be counting on a second Massachusetts miracle on Tuesday. Suffolk University unveiled a poll on Monday showing Democratic candidate U.S. Rep. Ed Markey with a solid lead over Republican hopeful Gabriel Gomez in the battle for the U.S. Senate seat vacated when John Kerry became secretary of state. Markey takes 52 percent in the poll while Gomez gets 42 percent of those surveyed.
These numbers suggest that tomorrow night Ed Markey will make the transformation from congressman to senator-elect, said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, on Monday. All eyes will be watching to see how Markeys final vote tally stacks up against Elizabeth Warrens 8-point win over Scott Brown last November.
Brown had won the seat held by Ted Kennedy in a major upset in a special election back in 2010 which served as harbinger for major Republican gains that election cycle. But, while some polls have shown Gomez running closer, all of them have had Markey ahead. Republican hopes are dimming by the hour of picking up the seat.
The poll of 500 likely voters was taken from June 19-22 and had a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percent.
