DWS Epiphany: I'm Backing Iran Nuclear Deal

Political principles and job security make strange bedfellows. Over the weekend Debbie Wasserman Schultz had a revelation, announcing a change of position: She is now a fan of the president's nuclear deal with Iran.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz
“In weighing all the information that I had in front of me, I concluded that the best thing to do is to vote in support of the Iran deal and make sure that we can put Iran years away from being a threshold nuclear state and ensure that we can more closely focus on their terrorist activity,” Democratic National Committee Chair Wasserman Schultz said during a Sunday appearance on CNN’s State of the Union.”

Not that Wasserman Schultz's approval matters for a floor vote. President Obama already has secured enough Democratic votes in the Senate to ensure Republicans won't be able to kill the agreement. But it may just save her DNC chair job. Or not.

The Iran issue had put the Florida congresswoman in a tricky spot, torn between the party line and her district, which is home to a significant Jewish population mostly opposed to the deal. The president reportedly was furious over her personal revolt.

And as a result, last week a number of national editorial writers jumped all over her. Many of them called for her head.

For example, Charles P. Pierce wrote in Esquire, "If DWS wants to oppose the Iran deal in her capacity as an otherwise insignificant member of the House minority, that's fine with me. But if, as it appears, as national chairman of the president's party, she actively campaigned against a measure designed to show the support of the president's party for a monumentally important White House policy initiative, then she should have been fired from that post yesterday."

What becomes of Wasserman Schultz's DNC post from here still depends on the good nature/wisdom of the POTUS. Time will tell.
