Dream Defenders Plan Their Own Special Session
Tuesday marks the beginning of the third week of the Dream Defenders' protest at the Florida Captiol, and the protesters haven't given up on a special session to discuss the Stand Your Ground laws in Florida. Since lawmakers have refused to hold a special session, the protesters will be holding one of their own on Tuesday afternoon.
The mock special session will focus on what the Dream Defenders call "Trayvon's Law" and will run for three consecutive days rather than over the next three Tuesdays, as was originally announced. A list of experts and speakers expected to testify at the "session" will be released Tuesday when the session begins, said Dream Defenders Political Director Ciara Taylor.
An official special session has already been rejected by Gov. Rick Scott and other lawmakers like Senate President Don Gaetz.
I think you call a special session of the Legislature when you have a landing zone thats agreed upon on an issue, said Gaetz on Monday. You dont call a special session, I dont think, and just bring 160 politicians to town, and turn them loose and hope it all works out.
In order to demand a full poll of the full Legislature, the Dream Defenders will need to get 20 percent of lawmakers to demand a full poll.
The Dream Defenders have been camped out at the Capitol since July 15 and have vowed to stay at the Capitol until a special session is called.
