Dream Defenders Head to Washington, D.C.

Miami-based Dream Defenders left Tallahassee Friday and headed to Washington, D.C., where they will take part in the 50th anniversary of the march on the National Mall.

Around 50 members of the group will be making the trek to the nation's Capitol 16 hours away. Leader of the Dream Defenders Phillip Agnew will be given two minutes to speak in front of thousands of people in front of the Lincoln Memorial before the first march on the mall. He will also be speaking on Wednesday along with President Barack Obama.

Im thinking I better not screw it up, Agnew said. Ive only got two minutes to fit it all in but Ill do it somehow.

The Dream Defenders became well-known for their 31-day sit-in protest at the Florida Capitol, where they spoke out against Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground law and demanded a special session to discuss the law. Gov. Rick Scott rejected a special session, but House Speaker Will Weatherford said he would hold a hearing on the law in the fall.
