Dream Defenders Enter Fourth Week of Protest

Monday marks the beginning of the fourth week that the Dream Defenders have been camped outside of Gov. Rick Scott's office, and their protest doesn't show signs of letting up anytime soon.

The Dream Defenders have been at the Florida Capitol for 21 days and have vowed to remain at the Capitol until a special legislative session is called to discuss Stand Your Ground laws, but Gov. Scott already rejected a special session when he went to visit the protesters in July. The protest has gathered the attention of national media and statewide politicians like Nan Rich and Dwight Bullard, both of whom showed up to show their support for the protest.

Rapper Talib Kweli will be visiting the Capitol on Thursday.

While the Dream Defenders want a special session, they said they would be open to hearings on Stand Your Ground. House Speaker Will Weatherford announced Friday that he would hold a hearings on Stand Your Ground in the fall, but the task of chairing the hearings is in the hands of Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, a supporter of the law.

Still, the Dream Defenders remain cautiously optimistic as they enter the fourth week of their protest.

The hearings will be an opportunity for people to discuss the laws, said executive director of the Dream Defenders Philip Agnew. We will hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
