Dorothy Hukill Applauds Signing of Data Privacy Bill
Sen. Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange, applauded Gov. Rick Scott for signing a bill Monday that would ban the collection of students' biometric information
In addition, the legislation will ensure parents and students are notified annually of their rights regarding education records, requires the Department of Education to assign Florida Student Identification numbers to replace the use of Social Security numbers to be used to manage student records, and other student data protections.
I want to applaud Gov. Rick Scott for signing and supporting this historic legislation to protect Floridas students and their sensitive personal information," said Hukill. "I want to also thank Rep. Jake Rayburn, R-Lithia, sponsor of House Bill 195, and members of the Florida Legislature for their support. Floridas children depend on us to do everything possible to ensure that they are safe and that their information is protected. As parents, educators, legislators and citizens we are meeting that challenge and protecting our most precious resources with the passage of this legislation.
This is the first state law in the nation to ban the collection of student biometric data.
