Don Gaetz: No Special Session for 'Stand Your Ground'

Senate President Don Gaetz said on Monday that there would not be a special session to discuss or repeal Stand Your Ground laws in Florida, nor is there any need for a special session to discuss the controversial law.

"I'm not sure what a special session would accomplish," Gaetz, R-Niceville, told reporters. He cited a lack of any consensus on how to change the law.

Stand Your Ground has been in the news consistently since George Zimmerman was acquitted of the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin in self-defense, but the Stand Your Ground law was not part of the trial. Protesters from across the state and the nation have been calling for a special legislative session to repeal the law.

Protesters have been camped out at the Florida Capitol for nearly two weeks, calling for a special legislative session. Gov. Rick Scott has already met with the protesters and rejected the call for a special session, but they are vowing to stay at the Capitol until a special session is called.

Gaetz took a shot at singer and civil-rights activist Harry Belafonte, who visited the Capitol on Friday and told protesters that if Gov. Scott and lawmakers didn't act, Florida could become "ungovernable."

"I think Harry Belafonte is a better singer than he is a prognosticator of public policy," said Gaetz.
