Desperation Time? Sink Ad Says Scott Would Racially Profile Hispanics
An explosive radio ad produced for Alex Sink's campaign says Republican Rick Scott "does not want [Hispanics] to speak Spanish or English with an accent."
The ad, in Spanish, portrays a father and his daughter stopped by a police officer, who demands to see their "papers." The script:
(Sound of police car siren)
Girl's voice: Dad, pull over, you are being stopped for speeding.
Father: I am sorry officer it looks like I was speeding.
Officer: Do you speak English? I need to see your papers.
Father: Why? I am have been a U.S. citizen for 10 years but I don't have with me my naturalization certificate.?Father continues: In what country are we living??
Officer: Sir, I am going to have to detain you until you can produce your papers.
Girl's voice: (translating for the father) He says he is going to detain you until you prove you are a citizen.
Officer: I am going to have to see your papers as well young lady.
Girl's voice: But I was born in this country.
Announcer: What you just heard could occur in Florida if Rick Scott gets his way. Scott wants a law that is stronger than Arizona in Florida and does not want us to speak Spanish or English with an accent. Is this the Florida you want for your family? Say no to Rick Scott."?
The ad drew a quick rebuke from Scott's campaign.
Alex Sink is quietly trying to scare Hispanic and Latino voters by running a controversial ad on Spanish-language radio, hoping other voters dont notice that shes smearing police officers in the process, said Scott spokesman Brian Burgess.
The Miami Herald called the ad -- which is airing on three Miami stations and one in Orlando -- "jaw dropping" and "fear inducing."
