Democrats Want Stand Your Ground Task Force Started 'Now'

House Democratic Leader-designate Perry Thurston, D-Plantation, wants the task force to review the states Stand Your Ground law to include members of the law enforcement community, prosecutors, public defenders and even sitting or retired members of the judiciary.

And, Thurston adds, the appointments need to be made now.

"I believe the task force should have begun by now," Thurston stated in a letter to Gov. Rick Scott on Friday.

As you know, there have been ample reports collected since the laws passage in 2005 of the law being used to shield individuals from prosecution after violent confrontations. The shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford on Feb. 26 and the potential defense offered by his accused shooter only underscore well-established ambiguities inherent in Stand Your Ground.

Scott and other state leaders have urged patience and to allow the state investigation to first be completed.
