Dean Cannon's Take on New DMS Secretary Jack Miles

Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, weighed in on Gov. Rick Scott appointing Jack Miles to lead the Department of Management Services (DMS).

The Department of Management Services has serious organic flaws, said Cannon on Friday afternoon. In 2010, the Florida House passed legislation to increase accountability and oversight within DMS by moving the department under the purview of the Florida Cabinet. Governor Scott indicated his clear intention to reform the department, and my desire to provide him the opportunity to initiate these reforms by leaving DMS under the purview of the executive office of the governor was our primary impetus for removing the legislation passed by the House from consideration for a veto override during the special session last November.

I know that Governor Scott recognizes the clear defects in the departments ability to provide appropriate supervision and to take responsibility for critical projects, and we are looking forward to working with Governor Scott and Secretary Miles to review their plans to rectify the significant structural issues within the department, added Cannon.
