Deadline Approaches on Donating to Legislator's Re-election Efforts
State legislators have a number of fundraisers on tap today in Tallahassee, as starting Tuesday those seeking re-election or running for other offices will not be able to collect campaign contributions.
House rules prohibit campaign contributions during the 60-day regular session that this year -- because of the once-a-decade redistricting -- begins earlier than normal.
The session gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and is scheduled to conclude March 9.
Florida is joined by Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington in prohibiting legislators from receiving campaign contributions during session.
Another 14 states prohibit registered lobbyists from making candidate contributions during the regular session.
