Dead End Ahead? House Assigns E-Verify Bill to Four Committee Stops
The long odds for an E-Verify immigration bill appeared to get longer Thursday as House leaders assigned House Bill 1315 to be heard by four committees.
That's a lot of stops in a session that's supposed to run just eight weeks.
The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Port St. Lucie, must clear the House Government Operations Subcommittee, the Business and Consumer Affairs Subcommittee, the Government Operations Appropriations Subcommittee and the State Affairs Committee.
This all has a deja-vu ring to it. Rep. Will Snyder, R-Stuart, couldn't get his E-Verify bill to the floor last session -- and he wielded more clout as chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
Senate Bill 1638, a companion E-Verify bill, has not received its committee assignments yet.
