David Rivera Backs Plan to Cut $100 Billion from Federal Budget

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky., the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, announced on Friday that he was filing a bill to cut $100 billion from the federal budget. The measure, which is penciled in to be debated this week, won the backing of Florida Republican U.S. Rep. David Rivera, R-Fla.

During the last campaign, Republicans like myself made a case for fiscal responsibility, said Rivera on Saturday. We pledged to the American people that we would reign in federal spending to combat the excesses of recent years. Last month, we voted in the House to pass a resolution to reduce nonsecurity spending to fiscal year 2008 levels or below. That was the first step to maintaining our commitment.

Now, we have an opportunity to continue to turn words into actions by making necessary, deep cuts to bloated federal spending, continued Rivera. This process will take time and require careful consideration, but we realize that in a time of budget crisis, like the one we are experiencing now, we must make difficult decisions in order to restore fiscal responsibility to Washington.

We will continue to work to ensure that the Senate and the White House understand how serious the House is about cutting the wasteful spending that has gone on for far too long, said Rivera in closing.
