Dave Weldon Considers Jumping into Florida Senate Race

Former congressman Dave Weldon is looking to join the Republican Florida Senate race, according to POLITICO.

Weldon, who represented the east central coast of Florida from 1995 to 2008, was in Washington this week to make the rounds with conservative groups and put out feelers to GOP leaders. He has already retained political consultant John Brabender, the top adviser to Rick Santorum during his presidential bid, POLITICO reported.

Weldon represented the Space Coast and Treasure Coast for 14 years -- six years more than he pledged when first elected in 1994 as a backer of the GOP Contract With America.

He could be seen as a candidate more to the right than either U.S. Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fort Myers, or former Sen. George LeMieux.
