Darryl Rouson Declares to Head House Dems in 2014
Unless there is some upheaval by voters in the next two election cycles, Rep. Darryl Rouson, D-St.Petersburg, will be running for minority leader rather than House speaker as he was technically required to declare.
In an Oct. 11 letter to House Clerk Bob Ward, Rouson, a former Pinellas County prosecutor, formally announced his "intention to stand for election as speaker for the 2014-2016 term."
The House leans decidedly to the right and little change is forecast when the November numbers are counted.
Currently, the post is lined up for Rep. Chris Dorworth, R-Lake Mary, in 2014.
House Speaker-designate Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, retains the designate tag until next month when he officially begins his two years with the gavel.
Rep. Perry Thurston, D-Plantation, is expected to take the minority leader label at that time.
