Darren Soto, Rene Plasencia File 'Chloe's Law' in Tallahassee
Pointing to the death of University of Central Florida (UCF) student Chloe Arenas last year, state Sen. Darren Soto, D-Orlando, and state Rep. Rene “Coach P” Plasencia, R-Orlando, filed a bill to mandate the Florida Department of Transportation create guard rails where state roads border bodies of water where drivers have gone off the road and drowned over the last decade.
Soto and Plasencia showcased “Chloe’s Law” on Monday.
“We have witnessed far too many Floridians dying due to drowning in water bodies adjacent to our state roads,” Soto said. “The death of Chloe Arenas and others has become a call to action for us to improve highway safety for these areas.”
“What happened to Chloe Arenas is a tragedy which could have been avoided,” Plasencia said. “Our responsibility as lawmakers is to identify these threats to public safety and advocate on behalf of our communities. I am proud to stand with Senator Soto and sponsor this important legislation.”
