Congress Passes Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's Bill Helping Jordan Against Islamic State
On Tuesday, the U.S. House passed the “United States-Jordan Defense Cooperation Act of 2015” which expedites aid to Jordan as the U.S. looks to help that Middle East nation against Islamic State (IS) terrorism.
The bill was introduced by U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., the chairwoman of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee and had the support of the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla.
“The U.S. couldn’t ask for a more committed coalition partner in the fight against IS than Jordan,” Ros-Lehtinen said. “The Hashemite Kingdom has been on the front lines, not only in the fight against the terror group, but also in the response to the Syrian humanitarian crisis. By passing this bill today, the House shows that we recognize that Jordan has a strategic role to play in defeating IS and also in securing our own national security interests. We are sending a strong message that we are committed to our allies and to doing what is necessary to help defeat terror and radical extremism.”
