Carlos Curbelo: Key West Terror Plot Shows Importance of Homeland Security

On Monday, reports emerged that Harlem Suarez, also known as Almlak Benitez, was arrested after plotting to launch terror attacks in South Florida. Surarez posted his admiration for Islamic State (IS) terrorism on social media and called for bringing terror to the United States.

U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., praised law enforcement and said this incident shows the importance of homeland security efforts. 

"I want to congratulate the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s office, the South Florida Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Key West Police Department, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and other law enforcement agencies for working together to neutralize this threat to our community and our nation,” Curbelo said on Monday. “I also want to commend the brave, un-named individual that recognized this threat and came forward to tip-off law enforcement. Because of their efforts, an untold number of lives were saved. Unfortunately, this incident reminds us that we continue to be targeted by those who wish to do us harm. We must remain vigilant against these ongoing threats and ensure our law enforcement agencies continue to have the necessary resources to execute their critical mission."
