Carlos Curbelo Backs Magnuson-Stevens Reauthorization on Fishing

U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., was one of more than 50 congressional representatives who missed Monday’s vote on the  “Strengthening Fishing Communities and Increasing Flexibility Act” which passed the House.

The bill reauthorizes the Magnuson-Stevens Act on marine fishing. Curbelo said he would have voted for the bill had it not been for travel days which resulted from severe weather in Washington, D.C.

"I am pleased the House reauthorized the Magnuson-Stevens Act, which is critical to the fisheries in Florida’s 26th Congressional District,” Curbelo said on Tuesday. "The communities I am honored to represent in South Florida, including Islamorada, the Sports Fishing Capitol of the World, are dependent on healthy fish stocks for both commercial and recreational fishermen.

“The important reforms in HR 1335 improve existing law by allowing scientifically-based management flexibility for our Regional Fishery Management Councils, promoting responsible fishing and preventing overfishing,” Curbelo added. “I thank the House Committee on Natural Resources for their hard work on this legislation for the fishermen in Florida and the thousands of anglers from around the world that visit our state each year."
