Cannon Backs Effort that Removes Mayor from Expressway Board
House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, is backing an amendment by Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, expected to come up in the wide-ranging transportation bill that would remove Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs from the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority.
The speaker is inclined to support Chairman Horners amendment because he is supportive of measures that attempt to prevent corruption, or the appearance of corruption. Additionally, Speaker Cannon typically votes with the bill sponsor on amendments out of respect for the members who have worked on the legislation he has chosen to place on special order, Cannons spokeswoman Katie Betta wrote in an email, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
According to WFTV Channel 9 in Orlando, "Jacobs is the only member of the Expressway board that would be removed if the bill passes in the state Legislature. The other members of the board are appointed by the governor."
