Bud Chiles Calls for Legislature to Forward Oil Ban to Florida Voters
With rumors continuing to fly that the House will promptly adjourn after being called to special session on Tuesday, independent gubernatorial candidate Bud Chiles said that the Legislature needs to forward a proposed constitutional amendment banning oil drilling in state waters to the voters in November.
As our state faces the most devastating environmental catastrophe in its history, Floridas lawmakers should listen to the voices of millions of Floridians who want a permanent constitutional ban on oil drilling in state waters, said Chiles. The people of our state well remember that this Florida Legislature came dangerously close to approving oil wells just three miles off our coast. They are no longer inclined to hear these same politicians say just trust us when it comes to protecting our seas and our shores.
It is time to put a sign up for the oil companies that reads, No trespassing in Floridas waters, by order of the people,' said Chiles.
