Bondi: LCD Makers Settle with Florida Over Price-Fixing Claim

Florida could receive $14.7 million as part of a $538 million price-fixing settlement with makers of LCD panels.

But no refunds will be available until ongoing litigation is completed.

The attorney generals office announced the settlement Tuesday between eight states and a number of electronic manufacturers that include Hitachi, Sharp and Samsung.

Price-fixing is detrimental to Floridas consumers, governmental agencies, and the economy, Bondi stated in a release. I am pleased that we will be able to return funds to those who were harmed by this illegal and deceptive behavior.

The complaint filed by the states alleged the manufacturers conspired through secret meetings and telephone conversations -- to prevent competition and to increase prices for the thin film display panels that are most commonly used to cover electronics such as laptop screens, flat panel televisions and desktop monitors, Bondis office stated.

Information about refunds will eventually be posted on Bondis website for those that purchased products with the panels between 1999 and 2006.

Litigation continues against other electronic goods manufacturers, including LG, Toshiba, and AU Optronics.

Other states involved in the suit include: New York, Michigan, Missouri, Arkansas, West Virginia, California and Wisconsin.
