Bill Posey Demands Eric Holder Name Special Prosecutor for IRS Abuse Scandal
U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, R-Fla., was the point man in Congress this week as Republicans demanded U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the Internal Revenue Service for targeting conservatives and tea party groups. More than 50 members of Congress signed a letter Posey sent to Holder on Wednesday demanding action. Poseys proposal has the support of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.
These are serious abuses and an independent special prosecutor is required to ensure that wrongdoers are held accountable and that public trust can be restored to the IRS, said Posey on Friday. Its obvious from the various congressional hearings and letters to the IRS that officials there were not telling members of Congress the truth and deliberately hid the facts from the public about the targeting of certain groups.
In the letter, Posey and the other congressmen make the case as to why a special prosecutor is needed:
To date, not a single IRS employee has been indicted for this offense. Ms. Lerner, who resigned from her position with the IRS, invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and refused to answer questions. The Wall Street Journal has further reported that the FBI does not plan to file any criminal charges.
In the midst of this inaction, The Washington Post has reported that the investigation into this scandal is being led by Barbara Bosserman, a partisan Democrat who donated a combined $6,750 to President Obamas elections and the Democratic National Committee between 2004 and 2012. Furthermore, she does not serve in the Public Integrity Section that typically oversees these matters, but rather the Civil Rights Division, historically the most partisan office at the Department of Justice. It is therefore reasonable to believe that her inaction is the result of political concerns rather than the demands of justice.
