Bill Nelson Wins Democratic Senate Primary; Pope Still Catholic, Water Still Wet

To no one's surprise, incumbent Bill Nelson has scored an overwhelming victory against token Democratic primary opponent Glenn Burkett in Florida's U.S. Senate race. Early returns show Nelson pulling in about 79 percent of the vote.

Sen. Nelson will now face off against Rep. Connie Mack IV, R-Fort Myers, in the Nov. 6 general election. Nelson, a two-term senator, succeeded Mack's father, Sen. Connie Mack III, in 2000.

The race is expected to be tight and heated. Nelson, following Mack's primary opponent Sen. George LeMieux, has called attention to Mack's previous history as "a promoter for Hooters with a history of barroom brawling, altercations and road rage." Mack has condemned the ads as just so much petty distractioneering and called attention to Nelson's voting record as a run-of-the-mill leftist whose policies have bankrupted the country.

Real Clear Politics averages reflect a statistical tie between the two candidates, with each polling at about 44 percent.
