'Awake the State,' Tea Party Play Chicken in Tallahassee

"Awake the State" rallies by government workers and their not-so-merry band of sympathizers are shaping up for March 8.

Coinciding with the opening of the 2011 Legislature, activists announced protests in nine Florida communities: Clay County, Cape Coral, Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Ocala, Orlando, Tampa, and West Palm Beach.

Hmmm. Where's Tallahassee?

Progress Florida, an organizer of the events, said there will be a rally in the capital city, but that details were not yet available.

Not coincidentally, a tea party coalition announced this week that it will conduct its own rally on the old Capitol grounds at noon on March 8. The "Save Our State" event, which will include visits with legislators, supports Gov. Rick Scott's efforts to reform public-employee pensions, cut taxes and reduce state spending by $5 billion.

If "Awake the State" was angling for a Capitol location, they will have to look for another time and place. The tea party got there first.
