Auto Racing Revved Up to be Florida’s Official Sport

A bill to name auto racing as the official sport of Florida hit a couple of speed humps as it advanced in the Senate Thursday.

The Senate agreed to advance the bill, SB 266, to a third vote that should occur Friday.

Several senators questioned the impact of auto racing compared to other activities that are more accessible to youths and adults, ranging from football, baseball and golf to tennis, swimming and fishing.

Sen. Evelyn Lynn, R-Daytona Beach, the sponsor of the bill, argued that Florida is the only state with three major speedways and the sport is a major economic engine, drawing tourists and auto parts makers.
