Another Palm Beach County Commissioner Charged, Booked, Out of Office

Another Palm Beach County commissioner looks to be following in the footsteps of what has become a rogues gallery of public officials in the Palm Beaches. Commissioner Jeffrey Koons resigned Tuesday, shortly after he was booked and charged with extortion, perjury and violating public open meetings laws.

Koons' fall from grace is yet another black eye for Palm Beach County, which the Palm Beach Post has dubbed "Corruption County."

In the past three years, three county commissioners there -- Tony Masilotti, Warren Newell and Mary McCarty -- have been convicted on various civil and criminal charges.

Two West Palm Beach commissioners also served time for felonies.

The Post said Koons' arrest was based partly on threats Koons allegedly made against a family that opposed his pet environmental project in the Lake Worth Lagoon.
