Ander Crenshaw Urges Congress to Clear Mile Point in St. Johns River
U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw, R-Fla., went to bat for the First Coast on Tuesday when he wrote U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., urging him to include funds to clear the Mile Point cross currents in the St. Johns River in the reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). Shuster is the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The Mile Point currents impact schedules for when ships can enter the St. Johns and port in Jacksonville.
Inclusion of the Mile Point project in the WRDA bill clears a major hurdle for one of Northeast Floridas most important job-generating projects, said Crenshaw on Tuesday. The sooner that work can begin on the long-overdue removal of navigation hazards at Mile Point, the sooner Mile Point becomes a safer port to welcome large cargo container ships [in] the region. The safe and efficient movement of cargo traffic through Mile Point is central to the current and future prosperity and is in everyones best interest.
Crenshaw is pushing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to handle the Mile Point project.
