American Crossroads Compares Patrick Murphy's Words on Iran to Chamberlain's at Munich
American Crossroads, a PAC aligned with the GOP, mocked U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., for backing President Barack Obama’s deal with Iran over its nuclear program. Murphy is running for the Democratic nomination to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in 2016.
Pointing to Murphy’s endorsement of the deal on Monday, American Crossroads compared his words to those of Neville Chamberlain, the British prime minister who thought appeasing Nazi Germany at Munich back in 1938 would prevent war.
“This debate has proven to me that America and Israel are fortunate to have so many passionate, diverse voices who all want the same things: a nuclear-free Iran, a secure Israel, and peace in our time,” Murphy said on Monday.
“My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honour,” Chamberlain said after Munich. “I believe it is peace for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Go home and get a nice quiet sleep.”
Ian Prior, a spokesman for American Crossroads, ripped into Murphy on Tuesday afternoon.
“Patrick Murphy’s rationale for supporting the Iran nuclear deal reveals a dangerous naiveté and a stunning ignorance of recent history,” Prior said. “Perhaps the next time young Patrick wants to express himself on an issue of critical international security, he should avoid references to one of the greatest diplomatic blunders in history.”
