Alligator 'Takes' 2-Year-Old Boy at Disney World; Body Still Missing

UPDATED AT 10:15 A.M. The search continues well into the Wednesday for a 2-year-old boy who was attacked by an alligator and dragged into a lagoon at about 9 p.m. Tuesday at a Disney hotel in Lake Buena Vista.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings told CNN the resort's alligator trapper had removed and euthanized four gators from Seven Seas Lagoon, where the boy was taken. But athorities don't believe any of the four were involved.

Out of extreme caution, Walt Disney World has closed all beaches throughout its property until further notice.

CNN reported the child was "wading just in the water along the lake's edge at the time the alligator attacked," Demings said.

"The father actually went into the water to wrestle his son from the grips of the alligator," he said. The father suffered minor scratches on his hand, but was unsuccessful in getting his son back.

The mother went into the water soon after her husband, trying frantically to find her child, but by then he was out of sight.

By 5 a.m. authorities were giving a "zero chance" of the boy being recovered alive.

Demings said there is no record of similar incidents in the Seven Seas Lagoon area.

The family of four -- parents, the boy and his 4-year-old sister -- had been vacationing from Nebraska since Sunday. They were staying at the Grand Floridian Hotel on the Disney property in Lake Buena Vista.

The sheriff said he is unsure of the alligator's size, that it could be anywhere from 4 to 7 feet long.

Dozens of searchers worked through the night, Demings said, and they will continue until the boy is recovered.

Check back later. This story, coming less than three days after 49 people were gunned down at a gay nightclub some 12 miles away, will be updated.
