Alcee Hastings Uses BP Anniversary to Question U.S.'s Drilling Policy
U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, used the two-year anniversary of the fatal Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico to call for a review of energy policies that require us to drill in the first place.
Two years ago today, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded, leading to the largest oil spill in U.S. history, Hastings stated in a release.
This catastrophic explosion left 11 men dead in addition to unleashing 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
As we remember the lives lost and devastation caused by this disaster, let us also take this opportunity to reevaluate our countrys outdated energy policies that require us to drill in the first place. The United States must end its dependence on fossil fuels and develop a 21st century renewable, green energy plan. Only then we will be able to show that as a nation we have learned from the mistakes of outdated policies and from tragedies such as the Deepwater Horizon explosion.
