Albritton Drops out of Speaker's Race After Miami Delegation Pledges for Corcoran
In an early show of support, Republican House members from the Miami area have decided to vote as a bloc, and their vote will go to Rep. Richard Corcoran. Their pledge is already having a ripple effect that almost certainly will put Corcoran in the speaker's chair in 2016.
Political insiders tell Sunshine State News the decision came Tuesday for the nine Miami representatives to back the New Port Richey freshman. After word spread to other House members in Tallahassee, representatives from Tampa, Naples and Fort Myers indicated they would support Corcoran as well.
With at least 19 House members pledging to vote for Corcoran, Rep. Ben Albritton, R-Bartow, said he is dropping out of the race, essentially securing the position for Corcoran. "I can confirm that I am no longer in the race," Albritton said at the Capitol Tuesday afternoon, indicating he will refuse to comment further until he can speak with some of his supporters.
