Alan Williams Files Legislation to Repeal 'Stand Your Ground'

The Dream Defenders may have left the Florida Capitol last week, but the battle to repeal the controversial Stand Your Ground law in Florida is far from over. Rep. Alan Williams, D-Tallahassee, filed legislation (HB 4003) Monday to repeal the law, which gathered considerable media attention after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

"We can finally have a meaningful dialog on this next month,"Rep. Alan Williams, D-Tallahassee, toldThe Florida Current. "I thought it was important enough that we at least put a bill out there for discussion, given the fact that a majority of the legislators in office right now were not here in 2005."

Many state legislators are not on board with repealing the law. Gov. Rick Scott already rejected a special session to discuss the law, and a poll of legislators found most did not want to hold a special session to repeal the law.

Next month, a House criminal-justice subcommittee will hold a public hearing on the law, but the overall chances of changing it are incredibly slim even with a hearing on the law. The Dream Defenders, who camped out in front of the governor's office for 31 days, will be present at the hearing to discuss the law.
