Adam Hasner: Todd Akin’s Comments 'Far Beyond Wrong'

U.S. congressional hopeful Adam Hasner of Delray Beach has joined a growing chorus of Republicans calling for U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, D-Mo., to bow out of his U.S. Senate contest.

Rep. Akin's comments were so far beyond wrong. He should step aside in #MOSEN, Hasner, who is running for a South Florida congressional seat, tweeted Monday.

In an interview with KTVI-TV, Akin, asked about his pro-life position on abortion rights in instances when a woman is the victim of rape, said that instances of "legitimate rape" rarely result in pregnancy.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said in the interview. "But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist."

Akin added support for the unborn while saying the person committing the rape needed to be punished.

Akin later said he had misspoken.

Hasner, who has promised to vote against any federal funding of Planned Parenthood, has said the procedures should be illegal except in the cases of rape and incest or when the mothers life is at risk.
