Adam Hasner Drops Senate Bid to Run for Allen West's Former Seat
Struggling in the polls, Adam Hasner pulled out of the U.S. Senate race Tuesday to run in a South Florida congressional district vacated by Rep. Allen West.
Hours earlier, West announced his move to Rep. Tom Rooney's district and Rooney shifted to a newly drawn district in south-central Florida. That left an opening for Hasner to run in West's district, which closely resembles the one Hasner represented in the Florida House.
The district, as drawn by legislative mapmakers, isn't as Republican as when West was elected in 2010. Two well-heeled Democrats -- Lois Frankel and Patrick Murphy -- filed to run there.
Hasner, who had been polling in the single digits, was not immediately available for comment.
The GOP Senate contest now distills down to a three-way affair among retiring Rep. Connie Mack, former interim Sen. George LeMieux and retired Army Col. Mike McCalister.
Businessman Craig Miller previously pulled out of the Senate primary, opting to run in the 6th Congressional District in a possible match-up against veteran Rep. John Mica, R-Orlando.
