Activists Look to Squeeze GOP With Immigration-Reform Rally in Orlando

Activists are looking to apply a little pressure of their own on the immigration issue.

A diverse group will rally and march in downtown Orlando Tuesday to put the squeeze on Speaker John Boehner and his Republican colleagues in the U.S. House -- including Florida Reps. Daniel Webster, Dennis Ross and Tom Rooney -- to stop delaying immigration reform with a path to citizenship.

The Orlando action is the first of many Democratic-inspired rallies across the country to get Republican leaders to call a vote on the issue. Advocates claim that every day the vote is delayed, immigrants are being deported and families separated.

The rally will begin at 4 p.m., with hundreds of activists expected to converge on the Orange County History Center. The march, to includefarm workers, DREAMers, undocumented families, union workers from various parts of Central Florida and at least one busload of people from South Florida, will go along Central Boulevard.

Organizations participating include SEIU, Mi Familia Vota, PICO Florida, Central Florida Jobs with Justice, the Alliance for Citizenship, and members from the Florida Immigrant Coalition.
