Is Longtime Congressman Jeff Miller Ready for a Senate Run?

June 28, 2015 - 3:15pm
Jeff Miller

Jeff Miller could be taking an unlikely turn as the lead actor on Florida’s political stage this week.

After last week’s Supreme Court decisions and this month’s special session, Floridians can be excused for wanting a slow in-between week as they ready for the Independence Day weekend.  As June draws to a close, the presidential election continues to eclipse the rest of the 2016 campaign cycle, but interest is rising in the race to replace Marco Rubio in the Senate.

Special Session Shows Rick Scott's No Lame Duck Yet

June 21, 2015 - 10:30am

Now that the special session in Tallahassee is over, Rick Scott will be taking a bow. On Monday, Scott will be criss-crossing Florida with seven stops on his “Tax Cut Victory Tour.”

Medical Marijuana's Back And John Morgan's Still Not Helping It

June 14, 2015 - 12:15pm

John Morgan does not appear to have learned his lesson from Amendment 2.

Morgan was back in the news last week as he wrote a check for $150,000 to get another medical marijuana amendment on the ballot in 2016. Amendment 2 lost by a narrow margin, just failing to get 60 percent in a year when conservatives came out in droves to vote. Medical marijuana supporters hope they’ll have a better shot come 2016.

Medicaid Expansion Supporters Will Find the Road Ahead Gets Even Tougher

June 7, 2015 - 11:30am

The Florida House drove the stake through the heart of Medicaid expansion on Friday but Andy Gardiner and his crew in the Senate had to take their chances. Things will only get harder for them in the months to come.

Steve Crisafulli and Richard Corcoran held the line in the House. Even if Democrats pick up a few seats next year, Corcoran should preside over enough of a Republican majority to continue to ensure Medicaid expansion goes nowhere.

Mark Miner: Ron DeSantis Version 2.0?

May 31, 2015 - 5:15pm

Ron DeSantis won the Republican primary for an open congressional seat in 2012 by running as a conservative, stressing his military service, attacking career politicians and nailing down St. Johns County. Now that DeSantis is running for the Senate, a potential contender could be using the same strategy.
