Rick Scott: Give Coast Guard More Drones, Planes to Fight Drugs

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., is championing a proposal to expand how the U.S. Coast Guard can use planes and drones to crack down on drug smuggling. 

On Thursday, Scott teamed up with U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., and U.S. Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., to showcase the “Coast Guard Drug Detection and Interdiction Act” which “expands the United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) to help identify and interdict illicit drugs.”

Ross Spano Introduces the 'No Pensions for Pedophiles' Act

A congressman from Florida is leading the charge to ensure convicted child molesters lose their federal pensions. 

On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Ross Spano, R-Fla., brought out the “No Pensions for Pedophiles Act.” The bill would amend the Hiss Act to ensure federal contributions to pensions would be denied to individuals who are convicted of federal crimes connected to child molestation.

Spano pointed to a case where a doctor in the federal service who is now serving time for sexually abusing children could receive up to $1.8 million through his pension. 

Natural Gas Bill Championed by Florida Republicans Heads to Senate Floor

A bill expediting liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports backed by Florida Republicans is building momentum on Capitol Hill. 

Back in March, U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., brought out the “Small Scale LNG Access Act” with the support of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, R-La. The companion bill in the U.S. House was introduced by U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., with U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., cosponsoring the proposal. 

House Passes Deutch Resolution Honoring Victims of Hezbollah

On Monday, the U.S. House passed U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch’s, D-Fla., resolution honoring the victims of the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires and calling for action against Hezbollah and Iran who were behind the attack which killed 85 people. 

Marco Rubio Joins Jacky Rosen in Push to Expand Funds for Holocaust Education

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is behind a proposal from U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., to create a federal fund to teach students about the Holocaust. 

Rubio, U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-ND, and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Ct., announced their support of Rosen’s “Never Again Education Act." Rosen’s bill would have the U.S. Education Department create the Holocaust Education Assistance Program Fund, expanding middle and high school education on the Holocaust. 

Al Lawson, Val Demings Champion HUD Inspection Act

Two Democrats in the Florida delegation are championing a proposal to have the U.S. Housing and Urban Department (HUD) crack down on federally assisted housing properties that do not comply with federal laws. 

At the end of last week, U.S. Rep. Al Lawson, D-Fla., U.S. Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Alma Adams, D-NC, brought out the “HUD Inspection Act.” 

Lawson introduced the bill on Friday and weighed in on why he had introduced it. 

Ted Deutch Pushes for More School Security Funding

A South Florida congressman is pushing a bill expanding federal grants to help school security. 

U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., whose district includes Parkland where the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting took place last year, and U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Tex., championed the “School Violence Prevention and Mitigation Act” this week. Williams is the main sponsor of the proposal.

Return Cuba to 'State Sponsors of Terrorism' List, Urge Florida Congressmen

Two members of the Florida delegation urged the U.S. State Department on Wednesday to return Cuba to the State Sponsors of Terrorism list. 

U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Francis Rooney, R-Fla., who used to be the vice chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee when the GOP controlled the chamber, sent a letter on the matter to U.S. Sec. of State Mike Pompeo. 

Both of the Florida Republicans weighed in on why they thought Cuba should be included on the list.
