Looking to speed up the backlog of VA claims, two Florida congressmen teamed up this week on a bill giving congressional offices read only access on claims.
Republican Ted Yoho and Democrat Patrick Murphy brought out the “Working to Integrate Networks Guaranteeing Member Access Now” (WINGMAN) Act on Tuesday. The bill was sent to the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Yoho and Murphy have worked together to fight for congressional access to VA claims, insisting it will help speed up the process.
“I appreciate Congressman Murphy’s support on this legislation,” Yoho said on Wednesday. “Ensuring that we can properly serve our nation’s veterans is an issue that surpasses political ideology, and I appreciate his efforts. We must all work together to provide the benefits and care to all those who defended the freedoms we enjoy. Their sacrifice can never be truly repaid, but this is one step in making sure we, as legislators and Americans, do our part.”
"When it comes to serving our nation's heroes, every effort must be taken to make sure they are receiving the highest quality of care and service,” Murphy said. “There should not be barriers in place that prevent congressional staff – who are already working closely with the VA and local veterans on their claims – from being able to update constituents in a more timely manner," said Murphy. "This change would help alleviate the burden on VA staff, better serve veterans by expediting the claims process, and help tackle the backlog of cases. I thank Congressman Yoho for his leadership on this issue and my colleagues for supporting this common-sense bill."
Almost 30 members of Congress, including Florida Republicans Carlos Curbelo, Ron DeSantis, Rich Nugent and Tom Rooney are co-sponsoring the bill. The legislation also has the support of some Democrats including Marcy Kaptur of Ohio and Charlie Rangel of New York.
