Yoho, Murphy Look to Speed Up VA Claims

Looking to speed up the backlog of VA claims, two Florida congressmen teamed up this week on a bill giving congressional offices read only access on claims.

Republican Ted Yoho and Democrat Patrick Murphy brought out the “Working to Integrate Networks Guaranteeing Member Access Now” (WINGMAN) Act on Tuesday. The bill was sent to the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Yoho and Murphy have worked together to fight for congressional access to VA claims, insisting it will help speed up the process.

“I appreciate Congressman Murphy’s support on this legislation,” Yoho said on Wednesday. “Ensuring that we can properly serve our nation’s veterans is an issue that surpasses political ideology, and I appreciate his efforts. We must all work together to provide the benefits and care to all those who defended the freedoms we enjoy. Their sacrifice can never be truly repaid, but this is one step in making sure we, as legislators and Americans, do our part.”

"When it comes to serving our nation's heroes, every effort must be taken to make sure they are receiving the highest quality of care and service,” Murphy said. “There should not be barriers in place that prevent congressional staff – who are already working closely with the VA and local veterans on their claims – from being able to update constituents in a more timely manner," said Murphy. "This change would help alleviate the burden on VA staff, better serve veterans by expediting the claims process, and help tackle the backlog of cases. I thank Congressman Yoho for his leadership on this issue and my colleagues for supporting this common-sense bill."

Almost 30 members of Congress, including Florida Republicans Carlos Curbelo, Ron DeSantis, Rich Nugent and Tom Rooney are co-sponsoring the bill. The legislation also has the support of some Democrats including Marcy Kaptur of Ohio and Charlie Rangel of New York.

"Yoho & Murphy"???... That just has to be a "marriage of convenience" ! Stop hanging out in Irish Pubs Ted, .. Go back to the "gene pool" and find a bigger, smarter and more experienced "fish" (I don't thing you need the "Mom & Pop Murphy Fund" support THAT badly),... after all Ted, you've ALREADY proven your competence to Florida (don't taint it now at this juncture...)

I agree with Michael! While I am receiving some benefit from the VA, I have had an appeal in for just over 3 years. Try speaking to someone about it, or anything is a monumental task of which there's typically no answer. The VA has their office in St. Petersburg, Florida and they hardly ever answer a phone! Now, I'm having difficulty with receiving a benefit check. I changed banks in January BUT kept the old account live to give the VA time to actually process the new bank's information. Now, I'm waiting for the very least, some sort of acknowledgement! Not holding my breath waiting for the reply.....it isn't coming, I believe. The VA is ignoring many claims and rulings by their own appeals judges. Very little has changed at the VA as the management,(for the most part) hasn't changed. So, they pick on the staff doing their jobs. I appreciate every doctor, nurse, technician, and their staff for putting up with the aggravation of working for the VA. Jeff Miller was worthless as the Chairman of the VA oversight committee, as most of those politicos, who turn their heads looking away from the real problems. Not one veteran is waiting for the promised changes....we realize that change is NOT coming.

Congress doing something for the Vets - is a joke! Nine years I have been waiting for a decision from the VA on my disability claim. The Court over the VA has ruled in my favor and instructed the VA to grant my claim. They have refused and keep ruling against me. They refused to even supply the information instructed by the courts to do so. Their hopes are that I die then this will go away. My attorney's say that the VA is ignorning all rulings and going the opposite way on all claims by "Blue Water Sailors". And that they "HOPE" Congress does something - yea right!! Like I said "Congress doing something is a joke"!
