Starting his fourth full term in Congress this month, U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., is poised to be one of the leading Democrats in the House.

First elected in a special election in 2010, Deutch has been moving up the congressional ladder, serving as the ranking Democrat on the U.S. House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee. Working closely with U.S. Rep Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., the chairwoman of the subcommittee, Deutch emerged as one of the leading Democrats opposing then President Barack Obama’s policies in the Middle East. Deutch stood against Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran and his refusal to veto a UN Security Council condemning Israeli settlements in territory also claimed by the Palestinians.

Deutch is set to have a larger role in the next two years. On Tuesday, U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., tapped Deutch as the ranking member of the U.S. House Ethics Committee.

“Congressman Ted Deutch’s integrity commands the respect of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle,” Pelosi said. “In his service on the Ethics Committee, Congressman Deutch has shown he is tough and fair, and in his new role as Ranking Member he will be a pillar of ethics and accountability.”

“In a time when ethical standards are one of the highest priorities for Americans across the country, I am committed to ensuring that the members of the House of Representatives are keeping their commitments to those they were elected to serve," Deutch said. "I’m honored and humbled to serve in this role.”

Deutch will also stay on as the ranking member of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee. On Tuesday, Deutch said he would continue to partner with Ros-Lehtinen on issues ranging from taking on Islamic State (ISIS) terrorism to protecting Israel.

“I’m proud of the bipartisan work we were able to achieve last Congress in the subcommittee with my colleague Chairman Ros-Lehtinen and I look forward to continuing this productivity in this Congress," said Deutch. "From guaranteeing Israel’s security and ensuring strict compliance with the Iran nuclear deal to calling attention to the human rights abuses of the Assad regime and fighting terrorist groups like ISIS, this subcommittee’s jurisdiction covers an active region with serious national security implications for the United States.”
