U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., named a South Florida congresswomen to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.

On Friday, Ryan tapped U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., the first woman to chair the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee and currently the chairwoman of the U.S. Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, a group of 55 people which oversees the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

Ryan pointed to Ros-Lehtinen’s record in Congress on behalf of Holocaust survivors as he named her to the council.

"Ileana has been a leader in Congress in the fight for justice for Holocaust survivors and ensuring that they can live their remaining years with the dignity and comfort they deserve,” Ryan said. “She strives to honor the memories of the six million Jews who were murdered during humanity’s darkest hour, and I could think of few more deserving of this distinction than Ileana. I know she will help advance the mission of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.”

“Being named a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council by Speaker Ryan is a remarkable honor and it is an undertaking which I will devote my efforts toward fully,” Ros-Lehtinen said. “There are some 15,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors estimated to be living in the South Florida community that I have the privilege to represent in Congress, many of whom I am proud to call friends. Individuals such as Jack Rubin, who passed away last summer, David Mermelstein, David Schaecter and countless others have inspired me to fight for justice for all survivors and to honor the memories of the millions of Jews and countless others who suffered at the hands of the Nazis. Their mission and the mission of the Holocaust Memorial Museum have been, and will continue to be, my mission to educate current and future generations to ensure that the world will never forget and never relive the atrocities of the past.”

Ros-Lehtinen isn’t the only South Florida congressional representative on the council. U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., the ranking Democrat on the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee who often pairs up with Ros-Lehtinen on foreign policy matters, including defending Israel, is also on it.

In recent weeks, Ros-Lehtinen, who was first elected to Congress in 1989, has been focused on Holocaust issues.

With this month marking the 72nd anniversary of the disappearance o U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., wants answers to what happened to him.

Last month, Ros-Lehtinen teamed up with U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-NY, to introduce a resolution urging the U.S. government pressure Russia on information regarding Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg’s, who saved tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews during World War Two, disappearanceRos-Lehtinen is working with U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla.,  in pushing a bill to help Holocaust survivors and their heirs with insurance claims.
