The National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC) launched an early shot at U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., noting how often he votes alongside U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
The NRSC unveiled a new digital ad on Wednesday, pointing out that Nelson and Warren vote together 92 percent of the time.
“The NRSC is debuting a new digital ad campaign to inform Florida voters of Nelson’s liberal record in Washington and its similarity to that of the new face of the far left, Elizabeth Warren,” the NRSC announced on Wednesday. “The ads will run on Facebook, and are part of a national campaign targeting Senate Democrats representing states won by President Trump in November.
“Bill Nelson has positioned himself squarely on the left, voting with Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren 92 percent of the time,” said Katie Martin, a spokeswoman for the NRSC. “Bill Nelson may try to pose as a moderate as the election approaches, but his record shows that he has more in common with Washington liberals than with Florida voters.”
Nelson is a top Republican target as he gears up to run for a fourth term in 2018. There were reports last month that President Donald Trump has been talking with Gov. Rick Scott, urging him to challenge Nelson. Scott, who faces term limits in 2018, is considered a likely candidate in the Senate race. U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., is also a potential Republican candidate.
On the Democratic side, Nelson could face a primary challenge. State Sen. Randolph Bracy is considering challenging Nelson as is attorney Tim Canova who took on U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., in the Democratic primary last year. Attorney and Navy veteran Pam Keith, who ran in the Democratic primary in last year’s U.S. Senate race, could also run again.
