The LIBRE Initiative, a group backing free market economics and focused on Hispanics, is going to bat for Florida legislators who supported expanding school choice in the recently closed legislative session.
The LIBRE Initiative released a mailing in both English and Spanish to thank legislators who voted to launch the Hope Scholarship Program which lets Florida students who are the victims of bullying transfer to public or private schools. The mailings also thank legislators who voted to expand the Gardiner Scholarship program which gives more school aid options to students with intellectual disabilities.
Cesar Grajales, the Florida Coalitions Director for the LIBRE Initiative, weighed in on Friday as to why his group was thanking these legislators.
“We applaud the legislators who fought for the best interests of students and families across Florida by supporting the education bill, HB 7055,” Grajales said. “Now signed into law, this legislation offers families a new lifeline and more options for receiving a better quality education. We believe that when you empower students and their parents with increased options, our community is better equipped to reach the American Dream. A better education has the power to change the trajectory of a student’s life and build stronger communities across the Sunshine State.”
The mailings thank the two Republicans in charge of the chambers, signaling Senate President Joe Negron and House Speaker Richard Corcoran for praise. Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Naples, the House sponsor of the Hope Scholarship program also was thanked in the mailings.
Besides Negron, LIBRE thanked three other Senate Republicans for their work on the school choice measures: Dennis Baxley, Kathleen Passidomo and Keith Perry. LIBRE also thanked other House Republicans, including Manny Diaz, Scott Plakon, Ray Rodriguez, Paul Renner and Chris Sprowls for their work on Hope Scholarships and expanding Gardiner Scholarships.
