Keep Survivors in Mind on Holocaust Remembrance Day

April 24, 2017 - 11:45am

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom Hashoah, we honor the memory of the six million Jews and other political, religious, and social minorities who were murdered in the worst genocide in human history. We take this moment to not only pledge to never let their memory fade, but solemnly rededicate ourselves to never allowing something so evil and heinous to occur again.

On this day, we also honor the survivors and those who fought against this unspeakable, malevolent mass crime.  As a Jew, policymaker and elected representative of one of the largest survivor populations in the United States, I have strived to dedicate myself to providing Holocaust survivors with the financial and social services that they need to live in dignity.

As this last generation of Holocaust survivors pass from this world, our moral responsibility to keep their memories alive becomes more sacred and essential. The resurgence of anti-Semitism, and bigotry toward religious and ethnic minorities makes that mission more urgent and vital than ever.

I believe one of the most crucial ways we can honor the lives we lost, and those valiant survivors still with us, is to unite and ensure that nothing resembling these horrific atrocities ever happens again. That sacred promise of ‘Never Again’ is something that must motivate us this day and every day as we confront hatred and violence, and protect the weak and persecuted.

May the memory of the holy be for a blessing. ZK"L.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., was first elected to Congress in 2004. She previously led the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Actually, as a Jew, I find you to be reprehensible, Deb. From your nefarious and anti-democratic deeds as DNC chair, to your constant rants alleging anti-Semitism where none exists- you are an embarrassment to Jews everywhere. I do not consider you a Jew, Debbie. A lying, back-stabbing, selfish, power-grabbing despot? Yes. A Jew? No.

You hypocrite................your and the Democrap Party that you have lead and still play a major role in have done and continue to do everything you can to take down Israel. You are the clearest example of what is wrong with the Democrap Party and the political process. I am not sure why this column showed up on this website other than to illustrate and give attention to your evil.

Well said. All of us have to be eternally vigilant.
