State CFO Jeff Atwater waded into one of the most competitive Republican primaries in Florida on Friday as he threw his support to Rebecca Negron’s bid to replace Congressman Patrick Murphy who is running for the U.S. Senate.
Atwater pointed to Negron’s service on the Martin County School Board as to why he is backing her. Negron is the wife of incoming state Senate President Joe Negron.
“I have known Rebecca Negron for more than 15 years and am happy to endorse her in the CD-18 congressional race,” Atwater said. “Rebecca is one of us. She has lived and worked on the Treasure Coast and in northern Palm Beach County for nearly 40 years. She works everyday on the School Board to improve our classrooms and support our teachers. I know Rebecca will fight hard in Washington everyday for our community.”
“I would like to thank CFO Atwater for his support of my campaign,” said Negron. “CFO Atwater has been a fiscally conservative leader focused on strengthening our economy and reducing burdensome regulations that discourage job growth in Florida. Regulations don’t create jobs; Washington, D.C., doesn’t create jobs; private businesses create jobs. If elected, I pledge to create jobs and restore our economy by simplifying the tax code, repealing excessive regulations, and repealing and replacing Obamacare.”
Negron faces former state Rep. Carl Domino, Dr. Mark Freeman, attorney and Republican leader Rick Kozell, Afghan War veteran Brian Mast and GOP pundit Noelle Nikpour in the primary. This seat is expected to be competitive in November as Democrats look to retain it.
Atwater’s name has garnered some buzz for higher office down the road including possibly running for governor in 2018. In 2012 and this election cycle, Atwater generated some speculation that he could run for the U.S. Senate but he did not enter either of the races.
