House Passes US-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, Names Bill After Ileana Ros-Lehtinen

The two South Florida representatives in charge of the U.S. House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee—chairwoman U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., and ranking Democrat U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla.---scored a win this week as the U.S. House passed their “United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act” on Wednesday by voice vote.

The name of the bill was changed to honor Ros-Lehtinen who is retiring after almost three decades in Congress. During that time, she was the first woman to ever lead the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“This bill codifies the 2016 Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Israel that resulted in an unprecedented $38 billion in security assistance over ten years. The bill also ensures Israel has access to the weapons needed to defend itself against any and all threats, enhances Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge to better address evolving threats, and authorizes new cooperation on drones, space, and global humanitarian projects,” Deutch’s office noted on Wednesday.

"My friend Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has been a stalwart friend of Israel throughout her time in Congress, and it is a fitting honor that this bill to strengthen the US-Israel relationship bears her name," Deutch said. "Israel is under constant threat from every direction. A threat to Israel, our strategic ally in a turbulent region, is also a threat to our national security. Enhancing Israel’s security is a step toward strengthening our own national security. This bill will significantly enhance Israel's Qualitative Military Edge over its enemies and improve bilateral cooperation on cybersecurity and space issues. Passage of the bill sends a powerful message of bipartisan American support for Israel and our continued investment in its security."

Both Ros-Lehtinen and Deutch took to the House floor on Wednesday to urge the House to pass the bill.

“I’m proud to have authored the US-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, ensuring security aid to our strategic partner Israel and more collaboration on everything from emerging threats to drones," Ros-Lehtinen noted, adding she was “humbled to have my colleagues rename bill after me.”

“My friend Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's long and decorated career, as historic as it was effective, will live on through her indelible mark on our robust foreign policy, especially her important achievements to strengthen the US-Israel relationship,” Deutch insisted. “The nation is grateful for your service.”

The U.S. Senate passed its version of the bill, which was introduced by U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and had more than 70 cosponsors, at the start of last month.

Wow, from the house of inequity into the fire. It's like giving Nazi Germany permission to kill the jews. Shame shame shame. Israel was started as a place, a homeland in which all Jews could have a place called home, promised by God, except: the ruling party has one goal in mind and it shows in the laws they make, the way they treat Jews who do not follow the zionist religion, (which is very unkind), the way they treat the millions and I mean millions of Palestinians who they already have corraled and subjugated. Like Israel really needs to be more of a warmongering nation. The United States just took a gigantic step down in the annals of humanity by providing Israel a means to break more international laws and promote crimes against humanity. Did you know that Israel is promoting a new religion to convert people to worship them but not be Jews? Wow. It's unprecendented. Time to cut down The US and the Israeli flagpoles at the UN because they do not represent humanity, human rights or their countries. About time to IMPEACH the president as well. Time to start taking anyone who promotes crimes against humanity to The Hague to stand for war crimes. I would think that no one is immune to that, even if they are parts of a head of state. Watch out dear members of Congress, the world has it's eyes on you.

$3.8 billion per year to kill Palestinians! A travesty! Instead, how about $3.8 billion per year to repair American infrastructure ... or even to build Trump's Wall! This Congress is the biggest bunch of jamokes in my lifetime!

I don't think that you understand what's happening. The entire $3.8 billion must be spent in the United States, so it is really just a way for the United States to pump money back into the economy. Think of the money as a gift card instead of a check.

U.S. House passed their “United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act” on Wednesday by voice vote. All those who voted for this bill should be marked for treason and prosecuted under US law.

No, processed under International Law for crimes against humanity at The Hague. That means that any nation can take them, (even if they are visiting on official business), and either put them to the test themselves or transfer them to The Hague.

That will froth Bolton's mustache, but yes these are criminals.

It seems odd that a Democrat has signed onto Pro-Israel legislation. Guilt maybe? The Dems have been staunchly anti-Israeli this past decade since our last president chose to embrace Muslims over Jews. And be sympathetic to Palestinians over Jews, Hamas over Jews. Hezbollah over Jews. And due to these jaded misplaced loyalties, got snookered by Iranians on a atrocious deal that costs us trillions in hush money, credibility and prestige. Not to mention our last administrations interference with the re-election aspirations of Netanyahu. Maybe this could be what Deutch atones for during the upcoming Holy Days. The only dependable supporter is the party that finally relocated our Ambassador to Jerusalem.
