Even as the pressure builds on Marco Rubio to run for a second term in the U.S. Senate, the Florida Republican who briefly held that seat announced a debate in the final days of the GOP primary.

On Wednesday, George LeMieux, who was appointed to the Senate seat back in 2009 and represented Florida for almost a year and a half, announced his LeMieux Center for Public Policy at Palm Beach Atlantic University will host a debate between the Republican Senate hopefuls on August 23, exactly a week before the August 30 primary. The Palm Beach County Young Republicans are also hosting the debate. WPEC-CBS 12 and other stations across the state will broadcast the debate.

"We are excited to be hosting the Republican primary Senate debate with the Palm Beach County Young Republicans at Palm Beach Atlantic University,” LeMieux said on Wednesday. "The importance of this debate is to give Floridians an opportunity to get to know the candidates and where they stand on the issues, and what better place than right here at Palm Beach Atlantic University, where leadership and service are the core of its mission.”

Currently there are five candidates running in the Republican primary: Congressmen Ron DeSantis and David Jolly, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, businessman and Army veteran Todd Wilcox and businessman Carlos Beruff. But none of them are gaining traction in the polls, leading top national Republicans, including presumptive presidential candidate Donald Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and the leadership of the National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC) to urge Rubio to run again. During his bid for the Republican presidential nomination,  Rubio had said he would not seek a second term.

While he has until June 24 to make a final decision on whether to run for a second term, even if he enters the contest, Rubio would not face an empty debate stage. Wilcox and Beruff have said they are going to stay in the contest even if Rubio runs again while Jolly has said he would leave the contest. If Rubio enters the race, his ally Lopez-Cantera would be expected to leave the race.

George Lemieux,.."Everybody's "backup" choice"!...Always a "bridesmaid" but never a "bride"! Maybe your "center for public policy" dawdling will keep you in the media long enough that you just might "get lucky" yet... (wonders never cease !)

Shoulda never attached yourself to "Charlie The Tuna" Crist; All that got you was the same Crist-refrain: "Not This Time George"! ! !
