Gas Prices in Florida Return to Where They Stood Before Hurricane Harvey

December 18, 2017 - 7:45am

Gas prices in Florida have dropped to what they were before Hurricane Harvey impacted oil production on the Gulf Coast, a new report finds.

AAA released a study on Monday finding, on average, gas prices stood at $2.38 per gallon on Sunday, the lowest they have been since Harvey hit at the end of August. In the past month, average gas prices have dropped 13 cents across the Sunshine State and lowered three cents in the past week. At this time last year, gas prices in Florida stood at $2.32 per gallon on average. Across the nation, on Sunday, gas prices averaged $2.43 per gallon, down from $2.47 the week before.

Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA and the Auto Club Group, said he expected gas prices to remain low even as tens of millions of Americans get ready to hit the roads for the holidays.

"Gulf Coast refineries have completely recovered from the effects of Hurricane Harvey, and are now flooding the market with fuel in anticipation of strong demand during the year-end holidays,” Jenkins said on Monday. "AAA forecasts a record-setting 97.4 million Americans will take a road trip during the final 10 days of the year. However, the strong supply of gasoline should help stave-off any gas price hikes that would otherwise be caused by such a surge in demand."

South Florida continues to see the highest gas prices in the Sunshine State with prices, on average, standing at $2.52 per gallon in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton market, $2.50 per gallon in Miami and $2.47 per gallon in Naples. Jacksonville and the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater markets had the least expensive gas in Florida with an average of $2.30 per gallon followed by Orlando with an average of $2.31 per gallon.

So far in 2017, gas prices in Florida have ranged on average between highs of $2.73 per gallon in September when the state was impacted by hurricanes and a low of $2.13 per gallon in the middle of July. Across the nation, gas prices have ranged from a high of $2.67 per gallon in September to a low of $2.23 per gallon in July.
